A White House protester Norman Mayer held the Washington Monument hostage with a van and claimed TNT. Police shot him as he drove the vehicle, which overturned. The threat proved empty. Mayer died, authorities said he acted alone and no accomplice was found.

Chrysler reaches tentative agreement with UAW in Canada

The United Auto Workers and Chrysler Canada reached a tentative settlement after a breakthrough in talks. Robert White said the agreement covers monetary issues and a ratification vote is planned for Sunday. About 9,600 striking workers are hoped to return to Ontario plants Monday. Police report Hyman Belzberg a 56 year old Calgary businessman was abducted as he arrived for work at the family furniture store. The incident occurred about 7 45 am MST with witnesses stating two or three men were involved and by noon there had been no contact from the abductors.
