Former mines minister Rog er Simmons, Liberal MP, found guilty of willfully evading income taxes from May 31, 1974, to Dec. 1, 1979. Four counts of false statements were dropped. He was fined 3,500 dollars. judge declined a jail term.
In Dublin the Irish Republican Army demands five million dollars for the safe return of Titley, a 49-year-old supermarket executive tied to the Weston food family, seized by six gunmen as he drove his daughter Susan to school in Rathfarnham, on November 24.
Lithuanian dissident priest Rev. Sigitas Tamkevicius was found guilty of anti state activities by a Soviet court after a three day trial. Tass reported the charge carries up to seven years in prison. He closely collaborated with Rev. Alfonsas Svarskas, who earlier received a seven year sentence in Vilnius.
City taxpayers face a 6 to 8 percent 1984 tax rise under a budget committee plan that avoids new services. With costs rising, the city may incur layoffs if wages exceed the limit.
