Titanic hull plate recovery attempt continues off Newfoundland

Canadian Press reports a 20 tonne section of Titanic starboard hull was to be raised today by about 100 scientists aboard a research vessel 600 kilometers southeast of Newfoundland. The effort followed an apparent Sunday failure due to a malfunction in the lifting system as researchers study the 1912 disaster and the ship’s rivets and hull metal.

Emergency declared as 8000 flee Salmon Arm fire threat

Premier Glen Clark announced a state of emergency in the Salmon Arm area and ordered immediate evacuation for 8000 residents as wind gusts threatened to push a forest fire toward town. Officials warned evacuees to prepare for a seven day order with possible extension and set up shelters in nearby communities.
