Rescue teams worked toward a woman wedged in debris as they pulled 210 dead from Friday's blasts in Kenya and Tanzania. An Israeli crew used a crane and drills to reach Rose in the Ufundi Co operative building beside the Nairobi embassy.
Canadian Press reports a 20 tonne section of Titanic starboard hull was to be raised today by about 100 scientists aboard a research vessel 600 kilometers southeast of Newfoundland. The effort followed an apparent Sunday failure due to a malfunction in the lifting system as researchers study the 1912 disaster and the ship’s rivets and hull metal.
Premier Glen Clark announced a state of emergency in the Salmon Arm area and ordered immediate evacuation for 8000 residents as wind gusts threatened to push a forest fire toward town. Officials warned evacuees to prepare for a seven day order with possible extension and set up shelters in nearby communities. Alberta’s Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Company C joined the effort with shovels and axes.
Alberta Reformers and supporters in the Conservative party press a Senate election plan as a response to a pending 2001 vacancy. Nine candidates are declared for the Oct 19 municipal vote, eight Reformers and one independent. Political scientist Peter McCormick calls acclamation meaningless if two Reformers win by acclamation.
Medicine Hat MP Monte Solberg says Reform MPs may rejoin the pension plan but could sit with other parties if it clashes with Reform principles. John Duncan has signed back in, while the caucus debates the stance and potential consequences before a Sept. 10 meeting. The memo warns the move could injure the party image and signal a tougher line on defecting MPs.
Watergate reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein warn that Kenneth Starrs White House sex and perjury investigation risks harming the presidency. Bernstein calls for limits as Woodward says the government cant function and future generations may view the episode as national madness.
