ERCB Sees Oil Sands Dominating Alberta Output by 2010

The Energy Resources Conservation Board projects synthetic crude from Alberta oil sands will comprise about two thirds of provincial oil production by 2010, with light conventional oil shrinking to roughly 258000 barrels daily while synthetic output soars to about 875000 barrels. The forecast hinges on a federal provincial energy agreement and faster productivity through new recovery methods.

Monster hunt called off in Alberta lakes

The search for lake monsters in Saddle Lake and Christina Lake is suspended. Ray Makowecki, head of the provincial fish and wildlife department for northeastern Alberta, says long hunts yield few results and the agency lacks capacity for such tasks. Saddle Lake is closed to boats amid reports and pollution concerns, while Christina Lake studies focus on planned road and campground construction.

BC Teachers Challenge Social Credit For Bargaining Rights

The British Columbia Teachers' Federation filed suit with the BC Supreme Court hours after Charter equality provisions became law. It seeks to strike down School Act limits on bargaining to salaries and to declare teachers exempt from the BC Labor Code. The federation asks for rights to hours supervision discipline job security transfers and grievance procedures, noting some boards negotiate none or some issues. The case aims to allow arbitration or strike as dispute resolution options.
