Ottawa reports weaker than expected U S first quarter growth prompting the Bank of Canada to cut its overnight rate to 9.75 percent from 10.32 percent. The sixth decline in as many weeks spurs expected further bank-rate reductions and consumer relief.
Winnipeg CP reports former Manitoba premier Walter Weir, who led the province from 1967 to 1969, has died at age 56 from a suspected heart attack. The短 sentence notes his brief tenure and sudden death.
