H. L. Crank of route two reports his brother Cornell Crank a cook who visited two years ago with his wife has not been heard from since. The worried farmer asks for help locating the couple and learning their whereabouts.
A Collin County Farm Bureau meeting is set for Tuesday July 6 at 2 p m at the local office to distribute the 1 per cent reserve fund from the 1921 1022 cotton season. Returns will go to all members who shipped cotton to the Texas Farm Bureau Cotton Association, part of an $85 000 state distribution. The association maintains a five year reserve fund totaling 1 250 000 for business needs. Attendees include members and friends beyond the 1921 shippers.
Commander Richard E. Byrd departs Roosevelt Field for Paris at 5 24 a m with navigator George O Neville pilot Bert Acosta and Bernt Balchen. The party reports misty and rainy conditions as the flight proceeds along the coast and clears storms en route.
Prizes totaling 135 dollars were arranged for decorated autos and floats in the parade on the first day of the annual ex-Confederate and Old Settlers Picnic. The parade committee, chaired by Henry W. Warden, includes L. V. Graves, Add G. Wilson, Ula Saunders, Charlie Graves and A. M. Russell. Prizes range from 40 dollars for best decorated auto to 80 dollars for most unique or comical car, plus other awards for oldest horse drawn vehicle and commercial floats. The three day event runs July 27 28 and 29 with Add G. Wilson presiding at the meeting.
A swarm of bees circled a six story office building in Independence near a business section on Monday. The insects deserted a sedan car parked at a corner and later fled into a hive after bee handlers spent hours attempting to corral them.
In Joe Leonard’s front yard at 507 North Kentucky Street a 6 by 9 foot pool houses about two hundred gold fish. Water lilies moss and pond plants create a colorful scene admired by neighbors and visitors alike, with Jim Leonard maintaining the artful display.
Kellogg company plans a two day promotion giving housewives a free family size pack of Corn Flakes via local merchants. Merchants will distribute the free sample on Friday and Saturday, with coupon ads appearing in the Weekly Democrat Gazette and Friday Courier Gazette. No purchase required.
Miss Florence Hargrove of Pittsburg returns to her home after visiting Mrs Nevil Talkington in town. She has spent two school terms teaching the Dunning piano music and plans to maintain a studio in Pittsburg for the coming term.
Mrs. E T Burton is reported Wednesday to be getting along splendidly in Baylor hospital after an operation on Monday.
H A Finch Jr retires as president of the McKinney Lions and is succeeded by L W Garretson a wholesale grocer. Other officers installed include Byron Hope L R Hoover Carl Gallagher A M Wolford Newton J Burkett and director KP Robason though he cannot attend from Boston. The club welcomes six new members and plans a busy year under Garretson with a celebratory gavel passage and a past president diamond emblem for Finch.
Construction has begun on a new 25000 dollar gin for the Sunshine Gin Co. east of the railroad. Lyon Gray Lumber wins the material contract with Will Osborne as wood work contractor and H J G Furr handling cement work. Machinery ordered to ship July 7. manager Mr. Robinson expects operation by August. The plant will gin Davidson's Sunshine cotton. ten thousand acres of that cotton are sought in Collin county.
The meeting place of the Sons of Rest was destroyed early Wednesday to allow courthouse rebuilding. The old-timers will search for new quarters as contractor 8 J. (Stony) Allen and his sons begin removing shade trees and curb up to the old courthouse. IL V Graves and Pierce England were noted in Dallas for business.
The Anti-Saloon League of Texas schedules a July 10 rally in McKinney with multiple services at First Baptist North McKinney Baptist First Methodist and South McKinney Methodist churches led by Dr. Atticus Webb and Dr. G H Lewis. The event promotes prohibition and asks friends of temperance to rally for strict enforcement of the Eighteenth Amendment.
Dr Clifford Weaver of the First Christian church speaks at 8 pm on Enlightened Women in Darkened Lands. Stereoptican pictures will illustrate the lecture.
Workers removed the cherished shade trees from the court house lawn Wednesday as part of a rebuilding program. The A J Rife Construction Company of Dallas holds the contract to renovate the court house, and the trees will be reduced from three to four feet to about twelve inches high. Citizens express regret at losing the familiar memorials around the Temple of Justice.
A Memphis firm, D. Darnell Commission Company of Memphis, seeks two thousand Jersey cows and heifers for a sale slated Tuesday July 11. The note cites strong demand nationwide, with buyers willing to pay strong prices for fresh cows and forward springers.
Grayson County officials plan an election campaign for a 2.5 million dollar road bond on July 16. A Wednesday meeting at 2 30 p m at the courthouse will gather precinct representatives to discuss voter information and the measure’s impact on taxes and road funding. Ben Munson of Denison chairs the eight member advisory committee formed by a mass meeting.
Mrs. J. G. Anthony of Fort Worth, daughter of J. W. Field of this city, has shown improved health after a long illness. Relatives and friends report she is doing as well as could be expected Wednesday. Her sister Mrs. Annie McDonald is with her.
The Fokker plane piloted by Lieutenant Lester J. Maitland and Albert F. Hegenberger reached Hawaii safely around 11 o clock local time. Radio reports from Station WFAA Dallas and coverage from steamships in the Pacific followed their progress as the craft averaged over 100 miles per hour for much of the voyage.
Annual memorial services were held Tuesday evening at the W C Burrus Odd Fellows lodge rooms. J H Sneed presided as citizens gave eulogies for J A Crutcher J RR Sportsman R C Merritt A E Beaver and R W Bonham. Dr O W Bagwill depicted Father Time as part of the crossing of time program.
Rev Alexander Hubbard and Mrs Hester Hubbard announce their silver wedding anniversary on Saturday July 2 at 8 o'clock at the Methodist parsonage in Pickton Texas where Rev Hubbard is pastor. Friends and former parishioners recall years of service in the McKinney district before his current ministry.
The South Wilcox Street Methodist church and the Melissa Methodist church Epworth leagues held a joint picnic at Istinch park in this city Tuesday evening. Melissa brought five or six cars of Epworth leaguers for the occasion. The 200 swings and other amusements, with jar games, made up an evening of fun for about thirty leaguers. Ice cream and homemade cake were served. Miss Leo Oneal of Dallas visited McKinney Monday.
A forest fire near Bakersfield has scorched about 35000 acres of Santa Barbara National Forest timber and spread toward Mount Antmony. Firefighters were brought in from nearby towns as the blaze remained out of control early today.
