Mr and Mrs Leslie Box and Teddy returned from a week in Pearl Harbor Hawaii visiting their son Jerry in the U S Navy.
New York cafe HoteEdison Rum House uses ice cubes made of one part rum to four parts lemon juice to cut water usage in making ice. The plan aims to halve the water normally used for ice in rum drinks.
Judy Hamilton daughter of Mr and Mrs Truett Holloway 701 West Louisiana St is among open division contestants for the Miss Collin County pageant Friday night. A McKinney High graduate she won many high school honors including Miss Collin County Cotton Queen and second runner up in the area. She plans to attend North Texas State University in September.
The proposal to double the ad valorem tax for the state college building fund leads a list of 10 proposed constitutional amendments in a November special election. Other measures cover veterans land funds, Medicare participation, four year gubernatorial terms, teacher retirement funds, student loans, charitable tax exemptions, judges’ retirement and removal rules, legislative pay, and four year terms for House members. A Sept. 7 vote would also decide Senate size from 31 to 39, potentially triggering a special session to reapportion seats.
Pakistani farmers wrapped a three day visit to Denton and Collin County farming operations in Frisco Prosper and Celina as part of a farm leadership exchange. They were hosted by local families and participated in a community supper and farm implement demonstration before continuing to College Station and Houston.
A 37 year old McKinney man J C Mize was charged with assault to murder in the shotgun ambush of an East Dallas tavern. Glenn Ronald Young a 28 year old Dallas man died after being shot as he left the Cave tavern. Mrs Mize estranged wife testified seeing the shooting. Young had faced a separate rape charge and was free on bond prior to his death. The assailant fired through the car windshield from shrubbery as Young sat in his car.
Mrs Danver Colgar was fined 100 dollars in Wainesville Municipal Court for biting Deputy Sheriff Michael Genco during an arrest of her husband. The judge suspended half the fine on condition she buys a new uniform shirt to replace the one she bit.
Cong Ray Roberts of McKinney was named to the Hall of Honor by the East Texas Delegation of the Texas Legislature. He received a certificate and honorary lifetime membership for two terms in the Texas Senate. Nominated by Rep Bill Dungan and unanimously endorsed, the East Texas delegation notes its aging leadership and ongoing regional support.
Warren M. Pulich assistant professor of Biology at the University of Dallas will speak at McKinney Memorial Public Library Saturday at 3 p.m. He will display bird skins and give a lecture. Pulich, a noted wildlife biologist and ornithologist, belongs to several societies and is author of Birds of Tarrant County. He donated a copy to the library and is researching the Golden-cheeked Warbler for publication.
McKinney Housing Authority Commissioner Earl Walker urged the city council to rezone part of a 6.41 acre site on Highway 75 near the recreation center for four apartment buildings within the 64 duplex units project. He noted term expirations July 5 for three of the five authority commissioners and asked council to discuss proposals with City Manager B. J. Cope.
Collin County advances eight highway contracts including US 75 grading by R N Adams at 1 3 million dollars from SH 121 near McKinney to north of SH 24. Paving work begins on a 707 200 bid by Uvalde Construction and R W McKinney. SH 24 projects progress with Public Construction Co and R W McKinney on grading and hot mix concrete from Wilson Creek to SH 289, and Denton County to Collin line. SH 289 paving from south of SH 24 to near FM 1461 starts under Austin Construction and South Building. A SH 78 project near Farmersville also moves forward with grading and paving work by Joe Davidson.
McKinney police held a 27 year old Collin County man Wednesday on charges tied to theft of 99 personal checks and seven Western Union drafts. The checks belonged to J. Massod owner and Commercial Flute, stolen from a hotel. Detectives recovered 70 checks, while 29 remain missing. The suspect was arrested in Farmersville after a tip and brought to McKinney.
Jerry Lee Surles, 25, of Frisco Texas, a Navy sailor stationed on the USS Ponchatoula at Pearl Harbor, died Saturday at Tripler Army Hospital from injuries sustained Wednesday night when his motorcycle hit a car after rounding a curve.
May saw a lighter permit month in Plano yet total permits for the year through May reached near two million dollars. Crumb reports five month totals including 122 new home permits and 2 727 water connections, with industrial, repair, and miscellaneous permits contributing to the year to date figures.
