Collin County Junior College board president J M Whisenant warned that weak citizen response may drop plans for a maintenance bond election. Of 40 letters sent, 12 replied with seven supporting, one opposing, and two for and two against. If no election is approved by Nov 1, the county risks losing a junior college amid overcrowding and rising education costs.
Newly organized Explorer Post No. 1013 at Trinity Presbyterian Church plans a weekend canoe trip and overnight on Grapevine Lake guided by Rev. Bob Lee. The three day Brazos River dream begins with packing gear, six canoes, and adult chaperones for a Friday 1 p.m. departure and 8:30 p.m. return to McKinney.
U S troops killed 77 guerrillas attempting to flee from river gunboats in the Mekong Delta near Saigon. Officials said heavily armed women and children guerrillas joined the two day battle on the swampy banks and waterways.
McKinney Business and Professional Women's Club installed its 1967 68 officers at Town House restaurant with about 50 attendees. Eunice Felty of Bonham served as installing officer and guest speaker. New officers include Alma Bright president Irene Love first VP Love Powell second VP Jane Stallings secretary Lexia Spurgin treasurer. Mrs Crouch named Woman of the Year with district honors noted.
Citizens visit city hall to discuss property valuations with the Board of Equalization. Over 60 residents appeared Monday and Tuesday before the three member board. The board plans to meet at 9 a.m. Thursday for the McKinney Independent School District at the school tax office. Revaluations were sent to property owners along the new expressway and fringe areas.
The State Board of Insurance announced a slight overall auto insurance rate decrease for most Texans next year while 12 percent of drivers face a $6.4 million rise in premiums under the Texas driving insurance plan effective Aug 1. The board will publish its decision next week after a quiet rate hearing attended by about 60 property owners.
E A Randles of the agriculture committee told directors the county wolf trapper had been laid off and urged rehire. He cited that 135 wolves were trapped last year and warned of overpopulation if females produce pups. The plan hinges on landowner funding with state aid. only $535 of $1 250 goal raised so far this year. Randles proposed a bounty on wolves and warned checks may be returned if funds do not improve. A separate Dallas item reports a station attendant robbed at gunpoint of 80 dollars.
President Johnson may order 19 year olds drafted first as he signs the new draft bill before June 30 when his authority ends. Congress approved the measure 377 to 29 after reconciling House and Senate versions. The bill guarantees deferments for undergraduates regardless of class rank and bars any lottery to pick draftees.
United Press International reports clear to partly cloudy and hot conditions across North Central Texas. Widely scattered thunderstorms are possible in the far north tonight and Thursday. Lows 70 to 78, highs Thursday 95 to 102.
Luci Johnson Nugent gave birth to an 8 pound 10 ounce boy at Seton Hospital at 7 59 a m EDT. The mother and son were reported in excellent condition and Pat Nugent expressed pride as tears from the husband surfaced. This marks the Johnsons first grandchild.
