A teacher notices a boy drawing entirely in black and calls a meeting with his parents, the principal, and a psychiatrist. The root cause is simple the child has only one black crayon and uses it for all drawings.
In a hospital ward a boy asks if a patient is there for medical or surgical care. The other boy wonders when illness began, prompting a humorous exchange about whether sickness was preexisting or caused by hospital treatment.
An Eastern guest at a dude ranch is wowed by a cowboy rolling a cigarette with one hand. The cowboy jokes that putting in the filter is the hard part.
The June 1 Jaycees luncheon at The Town House Restaurant featured a Lincoln program by Sherwood Smith. Two Key Man awards were presented: April to Bob W. Winders for publicity duties and May to Bill Turrentine for securing sponsors for the Miss Collin County Beauty Pageant. Wallace Coats announced a 30 day membership drive.
Seven local teenagers six girls and one boy were detained by City Police and handed to the Sheriff's Department. They face investigations for destruction of private property and disturbance tied to an incident near a fishing barge at Lake Lavon. Police also arrested a local white female for drunkenness and disturbance.
Homer Dugger, longtime Style Shop salesman, received the monthly Most Courteous Employee award at the Chamber board meeting. Fred McKinney announced Joe Harper as the new school superintendent starting July 1. Plans for a July 11 Appreciation Barbecue at the Community Center were outlined with a ticket goal of 300.
Dowdy presides as YT Williams acts as county attorney. New suits include Skinner divorce actions and Nicholson divorce filings. Several divorces granted in cases against Chapman Alvarez Farr Hughes Durrett Durrett Norris Reed Nalls and others. probate filed to probate Jim Perkins will.
City Council met Thursday night with Louis Miller presiding while Mayor Eubanks and Mayor Pro Tem Robinson were out of town. Bids from Collin County National Bank were accepted as city deposits for two years. Plan upgrades include six inch water lines on Barnes Street and Howell Street. Citizens discussed a drainage issue on North Finch Street.
Weekend traffic incidents yielded four crashes with minor damage and no injuries. On Chestnut Street a collision between Cecil Lane and Billy Berry caused 90 dollars damage. Other crashes involved Sue Hedgcoxe and Nancy Rhea with 120 dollars, Boswell and Wood at Parker and Howell with 40 dollars, and a Murray Green ville clash totaling 350 dollars with a parked car undamaged.
Miss Carolyn Pitts daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Pitts of McKinney was chosen Sweetheart of the North Texas Shetland Pony Show held Saturday June 3. The event drew ponies from north Texas and Oklahoma with 28 classes. A pony prize was drawn for Eldon Eugene Carter of McKinney. Carolyn, a Junior High graduate, will be a high school freshman and has earned honors for attendance and scholarship.
The seventh annual Culleoka Community reunion drew about 350 attendees at the Collin County fairgrounds on Sunday June 11. A noon dinner followed an invocation by Marvin Young and a song led by Jesse Dale. Officers elected for next year were Grady Jenkins president Jesse Dale vice president and Hazel McCollum secretary. Retiring officers were Chester Douglas president Howard Lee Poston vice president and Corsease Jenkins secretary. Organizers thanked the Fire Department McKinney Laundry the Country Club local papers and KMAE for publicity and help.
Harold L. Lyles of VA Hospital McKinney Texas will attend the Sixth Annual Southern Regional Institute of the National Association of Social Workers in Louisville Kentucky June 18 to 23 1961. Participants from 10 southern states will discuss social work in preventive medicine and psychiatry with speakers from Columbia University Boston University and the U S Public Health Service.
Miss Aundria Asher of Houston visits grandparents Mr and Mrs Bentley Rose in town. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Asher formerly of McKinney and has been appointed to the Brain Brigade at Spring Branch High School where she will be a junior this year.
Russell family members met Sunday at the Community Center with 103 in attendance. Grover Russell presided as president, while Jim Russell was elected president of the next reunion and Ray Farniz and Juanita Wilhite were named officers. The gathering planned to meet in June next year at Wintersmith Park in Ada Oklahoma.
Reverend Albert C. Walling of the Church of the Holy Family departs Sunday for Harvard University to take psychology courses under Dr Viktor Frankl. He will be away through August, with John Darden serving locally and a visiting clerk from Dallas and other cities conducting services.
Mr. and Mrs. Gomer Reece and son Sam completed a three week trip to Long Beach and other locales. They visited Mrs. Reece's sister Mrs. T C Wood and family and toured Disneyland Marineland and Knott's Berry Farm. En route they met their daughter Mrs Dan Duncan and children Cheri and Michael in Phoenix and Mr Reece's nephew Rev Charles Reece and family in Albuquerque New Mexico.
A pickup and a freight train collided in Van Alstyne killing three people and critically injuring two others. Victims include Minnie Stephens 58 and John Stansbury 27 and his six month old son Michael. Injured are Don Wayne Stephens 22 and Sandra Stansbury. Funeral plans listed.
Jett Smith and his Dallas based band led by Jim Chancellor entertained VA Hospital patients with old time fiddle tunes last Tuesday. The 18 year old Texas Shorty defeated fiddlers nationwide at Crockett Texas on June 9 and plans an album release.
Mrs Doyle Nelson Collin County Tax Assessor Collector reminds taxpayers June 30 is last day to pay state and county taxes before delinquent. Beginning July 1 an 11 percent penalty plus one dollar cost applies to real estate.
Melvin Fowler of 111 Fitzhugh Street sustained painful injuries in a car truck crash at the crossroads of Highways 121 and 289 in West Collins. He was driven to Wysong Hospital by Turrentine-Jackson ambulance and later transferred to the VA Hospital. Fowler was alone in the car and ejected on impact. the truck driver was uninjured. The collision occurred at 6 30 p m.
Judge Dowdy presided as new officers take over July 1 including Jack Bergvall as President Vernon Walker O Dell Bilderback Tommy White Clifford Byrd Liontamer Tip Horn and directors James Stewart K A Randles Holdover directors G H Pamplin Paul Worden. McKinney named as a strong market with retail sales of 20 928 000 in 1960 and an index of sales activity at 123 above the national average.
Mr and Mrs Jack Bergvall with children Charles and Betty and Mr and Mrs Clifford Byrd with sons Bob and Jerry travel to Atlantic City New Jersey for Lions International annual convention Bergvall is president elect of the McKinney Club and Byrd is secretary and praised for perfect attendance The group plans sightseeing tours to and from the convention city
Mrs. H. L. Threlkeld of Mt. Vernon Illinois arrived to visit her son Victor Threlkeld. Mr. Threlkeld met his mother at Love Field in Dallas on Sunday.
Police report a busy Tuesday night with arrests including a Mexican male for disturbance and four individuals of color on warrants for unpaid traffic fines. Six Dallas white males were arrested for soliciting without a license and a local white female is held for lunacy investigation. An out-of-state white male is held for inquiry while an escapee from the State Hospital Terrell was picked up locally. One sleeper remained in city jail. Sheriff’s Dept reports routine past-day activity.
The Mrs. H. T. Miller family reunion was held in City Park Plano Texas on Sunday June 11. Seventy two persons attended including Mrs. Miller ten children sixteen grandchildren twenty five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Guests totaled three with good food and a strong family name. Plans were made to make the reunion an annual event.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Stelzer of Celina were McKinney visitors Friday afternoon according to local notes.
