In face of the dilatory efforts of some units of the reactionary press in this Section of the country to give the impression that the league of nations is a partisan measure in an Effort to a Rouse the opposition of their readers to the covenant it is re freshing to read the opinions of the progressive leaders of both great political parties and notice the similarity of their views regarding the league expressed opinions which refute any implications of partisanship in this important mat Ter. Scott Smith of the Kane Republican chairman of the re publican county committee is a Good Republican and because he is a Good Republican he is a Good american. As a Good a Merican or. Smith is outs Okenly for the league of nations As the following editorial appearing under the heading Lodge again in the Kane Republican monday will testify. The defeat of Lodge s amendment to the peace treaty pro Viding that the economic privileges on the Shantung Peninsula shall be restored to China May be taken to mean the Early ratification of the treaty and league of nations covenant by the Senate. Only three of the foreign relations committee s 45 proposed amendments remain to be acted one relating to a Merican representation on the reparation commission and two to equalization of voting Power in the league Assembly. The majority of the Senate has made it Clear that is is opposed to amendments which would make necessary the recommitment of the treaty to the principal signatories and would mean a delay of perhaps Many months. If the Shantung Amend ment had been approved. Great Britain France and Japan of course have refused assent. It is America can per form its part towards China by a a refusal in the Senate chooses to go that far to be bound by the treaty pro vision on Shantung. To attempt to lift the provision out of the treaty was out o f the question. Who participated in the peace conference express no doubt that Japan will withdraw from Shantung in a Short time the treaty requires Germany to hand Over to Japan All the documents relative to Shantung within three months after the treaty comes into Force. Japan has promised that when this is done she immediately will take Steps towards restitution in a for of China. She has pledged herself to restore to China sovereignty and its full exercise Over the territory in question. She has made certain definite promises which if carried out Wil merely place her on a with other nations which have con Cessions in China. The sympathy of America is with China in this matter. We did not like the seeming that the German rights Given under duress should pass to Japan As in payment of services to the allies from which China derived nothing but a change of Mas ters. But Japan s subsequent statement of conditions clarified the situation to some extent at least. To the circumstances i was deplorable that senator Lodge Felt called upon to revive our old Friend the yellow Thos. Flaherty is running on his own splendid record for re election for county commissioner and it is a record that will Bear tie closest scrutiny by the voters. He has made one of the finest county county has Ever had. Due in a Large measure to his a torts the Good roads Bond Issue was put through with the subsequent Road building operations one of the most progressive measures Ever adopted by a county of the Commonwealth causing the entire state to set up and take notice. The comity buildings have been improved and kept in the Best of repair at a minimum of Cost to the taxpayers. The writer Well remembers a conversation with or. Flaherty at the approach of Christmas when he told of a he had in mind of finding Good Homes for a number of the Little charges of the Mckean county Home and enlisted our support in giving the Plain publicity. As a result of his efforts Good Homes were found for a number of the Little ones and a number of childless families received god Given living gifts on that memorable Christmas. This in our mind demonstrated a big Streak of human kindness in the m Ake up of big Blunt two listed Tom Flaherty. When the War broke out his time and financial Means were Given Unstine Teddy to the cause. He gave until it he sent his two Fine boys who went through the strenuous Campaign with the 28th division and although he was past military age be volunteered himself and the Democrat understands his services would have been accepted had the War continued. 1 at Lindholme s Jujj you can find everything in spices. The democratic party has a ticket in the Field this year which is making a Strong Appeal to the voters regardless of party lines if the ticket is elected in its entirety it will not be so much of a party Victory As a Victory of Merit. No democratic voter can afford to show any partiality in selecting particular candidates the ticket which stands unexcelled contains the names of Sev iral leading Republican candidates endorsed by the democratic voters for important county offices and it would not be a by surprising if Many voters of that party find the democratic col nmn More attractive than their own and vote the straight ticket which contains the names of the favorite Republican candidate no Democrat should swerve from his allegiance to this splendid ticket in its entirety.
