Longtime Wellsboro Lawyer Mortimer Elliott Dies at 68
Mortimer F. Elliott died at his Mansfield home on Thursday August 6 after a long illness. Born September 24, 1839 in Cherry Flats to Col. Nathaniel A. and Anna Myra Hart Elliott, he studied law with Judge Stephen P. Wilson and was admitted to the bar on June 2, 1862. He built a notable oil-law practice in Wellsboro and Bradford area, later serving as General Solicitor for Standard Oil Company until illness forced his return to Mansfield. A Temperance advocate, he briefly pursued national politics, winning a seat in the 48th Congress after a 1872 election. He remained devoted to his profession throughout life.
