Lucky Baldwin the California pioneer and gold king
A Ralph D. Paine retelling in Outing Magazine recounts E. J. Baldwin from Racine Wisconsin who led a gold seeking party to California in 1853. He survived Indian attack near Utah, mined at Hangtown, found fortune with the Comstock lode, and earned the nickname Lucky Baldwin for seven and a half million dollars in Ophir stock. He shaped San Francisco growth, built hotels theaters and blocks, bought Spanish grants near Los Angeles, and created a grand ranch estate with tree lined avenues and tropical gardens.

The Maneuvering Mamma in Modern Courtship
The article argues that the maneuvering mamma is nearly extinct as modern daughters freely handle love affairs. It notes that love marriages, once a concern for mothers even twenty years ago, are now rare by May, reflecting shifts in social control and dating norms.
