County will explore Penn Central right-of-way for bike path

Will and south Cook county officials meet to discuss acquiring the abandoned Penn Central rail line for recreation. About 40 representatives from Matteson Park Forest Joliet Will county Frankfort New Lenox and state agencies will review the proposal and plan a follow up meeting at Frankfort village hall. A forest preserve district official notes no definite use or price yet as Penn Central is in receivership. If funded the project would require coordinated action by multiple local governments with a potential 18 mile stretch of right of way between Matteson and Joliet. The idea surfaced after service on the Joliet Matteson line was abandoned and a county plan commission study followed.
