Illinois doubles penalties for cable theft under new law
Gov. Jim Edgar signed the 1992 cable consumer protection act stiffening penalties for manufacturing selling and distributing illegal cable equipment from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class 4 felony. It also raises penalties for using such devices and for receiving unauthorized signals. Distributors face at least one year and up to three years in prison with fines of 10000 or more, while receivers face up to one year or 1000 or more. The act aligns with federal law and allows FBI and U.S. attorneys to prosecute cable pirates.
