A guide to hayrides, seasonal festivals, and family friendly events offering entertainment options for all ages. Highlights include outdoor fairs, craft markets, live music, wagon rides, and children's activities designed for weekend family outings.
Village residents gathered for an outdoor meeting on Lawn dale Avenue and Jackson Street to discuss Hands Across Southland. The event on September 26 seeks 500 volunteers and a 10 mile route from Hazel Crest to Richton Park with a motorcade and torch bearers ending at Rich Central High School.
Park Forests popular Scenic 10 race returns for its 22nd year with an 8 a.m. start on Monday. The course runs four miles through Cook County forest preserves from Western Avenue to Rich East High School and finishes at Orchard Street. Bud James, race director, expects thousands of participants including many international runners. Ann Swayka, CARA director, says the forest hills will test top athletes and that CARA members will use the event to gauge marathon training times.
August volunteers inspected Matteson homes for the village beautification program. Top maintained homes will be recognized at a Village Board meeting with a flower shaped wooden plaque. In its eighth year the program motivates pride in property upkeep per LaVerne Woods.
Dr. James Thompson of Associated Allergists and Asthma Specialists notes ragweed pollen peaks from midsummer to October while mold exposure rises with humidity and damp leaves. He warns allergy sufferers in Orland Park Flossmoor and Chicago offices to expect sneezing watery eyes and congestion as days shorten and temperatures vary.
