State education funding and district consolidation debate
Ms ONeill notes district needs depend on enrollment not daily attendance while Gov Thompson pushes consolidation for equity. Butler cites unit districts cutting admin costs only to raise elementary salaries. Illinois ranks poorly in funding with local property taxes covering about 80 percent of district budgets and the state contributing roughly 20 percent.

Motoring near misses spark fear of child snatching
Passing motorists helped foil two alleged abduction attempts in the suburbs. In Midlothian a brown van driver and a black female passenger tried to lure a girl into the vehicle, but a bystander intervened. A day later a bearded man in a light blue car tried to direct a 12 year old into his car near Cicero avenue, and a neighbor repelled him. No one was abducted or harmed, investigators said. Police noted several similar incidents recently, prompting a school meeting led by Crestwood Kolmar principal Leonard Clore.
