State health director urges flu vaccination for upcoming season
Dr John R Lumpkin urges vaccination as flu season nears, stressing protection for elderly and chronically ill. He notes 70 to 90 percent effectiveness in healthy adults, vaccines are best given by October, and annual shots cover most circulating strains. High risk groups include nursing home residents, those with chronic lung or heart disease, HIV, diabetes, kidney or blood conditions, pregnant women, and children on long-term aspirin.
