New HOPE Scholarship Incentives Cut College Costs
South Suburban College eyes higher enrollments as the federal Tax Relief Act of 1997 expands education tax benefits. The HOPE credit covers up to 100 percent of the first thousand dollars and 50 percent of the second thousand in tuition for the first two years, with half-time enrollment required and income limits applying. A lifetime learning credit, employer assistance exclusion, student loan interest deduction, and education IRAs further ease college costs, effective after mid-1998 for many measures. John Semple can provide details at 596-2000 Ext. 2438.
