Matteson looks to cut costs with 1994 tax levy plan

Matteson officials seek a 5.8 percent tax levy raise for 1994 while eliminating the $15 village vehicle sticker. Fire safety concerns raised at Aunt Martha's group home

Fire officials in Crete Township continue to scrutinize Aunt Martha's group home on Wolpers Road. Fire Chief Larry R. Noll of the Steger Estates Fire Department reports five dispatches from Oct 20 to 29. On Oct 25 staff asked responders not to come due to an alarm triggered by ongoing work. He notes the person in charge lacked access to the alarm area and could not assume emergency responsibility.

Reynolds says financial charges recanted in case

Former aide Earl Worthington recanted financial impropriety claims against Rep. Mel Reynolds as reported on weekend television. Reynolds, who won reelection, says Worthington admitted lying about charges including theft of credit cards and checks and asserts the 20 count indictment will collapse. He says Worthington recanted to Cook County prosecutors on Aug 18, and complains only negative leaks reach the press. Page A-4.

Forestry grant to educate on tree care across three villages

Matteson Richton Park and Park Forest join to obtain an Urban and Community Forestry grant funded by the Illinois Department of Conservation. Patrick Ryan will lead the South Suburban program with each village matching 9358 in in kind services. Matteson will provide staff time rather than cash, aiming to boost community education on forestry.

Matteson police probe afternoon fatal shooting

Police and investigators at the scene on Keeler Avenue near Lindenwood Drive refused to identify the victim or discuss suspects. A neighbor reported about six shots at 1 50 p m as officers questioned residents at the apartment complex parking lot area near Governors and Lincoln highways.
