Olympia Fields plans panel backs rezoning with caveats

Olympia Fields planning commission voted to recommend village board approval of commercial zoning for about 14 acres at Route 30 and Western Avenue, with the decision contingent on a planned unit development for MRX Development Inc. The MRX project would anchor a Jewel Foods store in a strip mall adjacent to Park Forest homes, but residents and planners urged stronger screening, wider berms, and taller plantings to reduce impact.

Matteson board to study parcels for sale and annexation issues

The village authorized staff under Village Attorney Perozzi to investigate title status and obtain appraisals for parcels near the American Legion hall, Oxford Yale lane, and Central Avenue with plans to convert proceeds into productive assets. A proposal to discuss deannexation near Matteson Park Forest was deferred, and a hotel motel tax vote was postponed to December 1 for further review.

Barr Criticized for Board Pick Delays and Cronyism Claims

Coggeshall labeld the board process flawed and political cronyism, warning it could deter future candidates. Joy Rogers and Muriel Dawson supported Barr citing his education background and community service, including a decade on Rich Township High School District 227 board and leadership roles. Barr said he sought the post for experience and temperament to aid the district, noting broad interest from residents since leaving District 227.

Water treatment debate compares lime softening and ion exchange

Village officials toured treatment facilities in Richton Park and Kankakee. Lime softening creates sludge and is costly to build and operate while ion exchange adds sodium to the water, affecting low-salt diets. Both systems could treat two million gallons daily and would likely raise water rates. Final costs remain unsure as figures evolve.

Rich Township Eyes Leasing Trail Property Amid Cleanup Plan

Rich township trustees support leasing the edge of the proposed trail property to remove junk and mattresses using large equipment. Glassford says public interest is high and trespasser concerns should not deter access. The board agrees to lease until purchase can be completed.
