Voters in Matteson approved a 2.6 million bond for a new library on 207th and School streets and raised the operating tax cap to 25 cents per 100 of assessed value, passing 599 434 for the bond and 529 495 for the tax increase amid debate over site choice and green space.
The village plans a 1990 property tax levy higher than 1989 to cover police and fire pension increases, South Suburban Recreation costs, and library bond-related funding. Operating levies would stay at 1.15 million, while pension and library costs push the overall rate up about 2.5 cents per 100 of assessed value. A levy ordinance is set for November 20 with a public hearing December 4.
Suburban towns gain the full fine amount from traffic tickets with added court costs up to 66 dollars starting November 1 after Cook County judges ordered the shift. Chiefs in Richton Park and Harvey express skepticism while Beth Royle of the Suburban Mayors Association notes state revenue declines amid fines restructuring. Police gain or lose depending on supervision, guilty pleas, and the cost of officer overtime.
Henry Swan captured 59 percent of the vote 262 to 179 over Alice Hale Dearborn to fill the unexpired District 159 term. Swan thanked Dearborn and predicted she would win next time as Matteson Richton Park area school boards saw incumbents and newcomers elected without opposition and Prairie State College trustees chosen.
Richton Park trustees awarded the village 1 million dollar bond issue to Bank of Homewood. total cost rises to 1.64 million with 7.25 percent interest over 15 years to fund two well water softening facilities. residents approved the project in an advisory referendum and water bills will rise to cover debt payments.
