Matteson hosts a memorial day gala with a 9 30 a m service at Legion Hall to lay a wreath for post namesakes. A flag raising at Village Hall opens a parade featuring Boy Scouts, historical society, Rich Township groups and bands from Huth Upper Grade Center, Rich East and Rich South. The procession travels to Memorial Park for services and speakers before returning to the post for refreshments.
Park Forest residents will hear about refurbishment plans for The Centre shopping plaza at a June 4 town meeting at 10 a.m. in Rich East High School auditorium. Developer Harold Back, who bought The Centre in December 1993 for 15.9 million, may discuss a name change reflecting Park Forest downtown and his 120 day study plan.
In spring session Illinois lawmakers face gridlock with Republicans controlling the Senate and Democrats controlling the House. With Nov 8 Election Day looming, only a few noncontroversial bills reached Governor Jim Edgar's desk as both chambers adjourned for June. See Legislature, Page A-6.
Mitch Martin reports two serious crashes occurred in Crete during May within the I-394 and Steger Road area, flagged as the town's three most dangerous spots. Investigator John Enochs notes dips, hills and multiple driveways on Steger Road worsen risk. since 1990 the triangle recorded 177 accidents with 38 injuries and three deaths.
