Memorial Day traffic deaths in Illinois down sharply

Preliminary National Safety Council figures show seven Illinois fatalities on the Memorial Day weekend, a drop from 17 the prior year. State Police report six deaths, all on rural downstate roads, with no interstates or Chicago area fatalities. Officials credit belt use, slower speeds, rain, fewer travelers, and visible safety campaigns. Nationwide fatalities totaled 416, with California leading at 46.

Nursing degree debate pits access against quality

State lawmakers clash over SB 1217 and the push for four-year nursing degrees. Senator Jones argues two-year programs produce qualified RNs and warns a four-year requirement would exclude many. Senator Aldo DeAngelis criticizes the push as heavy handed and favors tiered certification while noting supervisory roles often require a bachelor’s degree.
