Transition program planned for 30 PRE students at Beacon Hill
Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163's Beacon Hill Primary Center will run a summer Transition Program for Pupil Readiness Program students who will enter kindergarten in the fall. Habtemichael, Beacon Hill assistant principal and program coordinator, said 55 children are moving from PRP to kindergarten and 41 families have shown interest, but only 30 spots exist. The program, staffed by two teachers two aides and a community liaison, covers alphabet shapes numbers literacy language development writing and higher level thinking with field trips. The curriculum was designed with input from summer school teachers to boost basic skills and student achievement. Funded by a state grant for early intervention, classes run Monday through Thursday 9 am to noon June 10 to July 7. The Board recognized staff with 25 years of service and approved the 1996-97 school calendar beginning August 27.

Wedding Fight Ends Steger Reception in Police Action
A May 18 reception at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Steger ended as about 250 people were dispersed after a fight between Jose L. Castro and Eduardo Alfaro sparked a crowd disturbance. Alfaro was charged with battery mob action and Castro with mob action. several others were charged and released on bonds. All six defendants are slated for Cook County Circuit Court in Markham on June 26.

Suburban schools win waivers from state education rules
Springfield reports that the General Assembly approved waivers for 11 south suburban districts to modify or avoid certain education laws. Notable changes include allowing Abraham Lincoln classroom observances in Matteson 162 and Thornton Fractional 215, waiving or shifting physical education and health requirements, and permitting nonclassroom nursing in Orland Park 135. Statewide, 87 requests were granted with 18 denied.
