Separate rock throwing trials sought in Layfield murder case
Three Steger teens Leon DeRouin Kevin DeLorenzo and Matthew Taylor face separate murder trial requests in the November 25 1988 killing of Chicago man Charles Layfield on I-57 after a large rock crashed through a truck windshield. The trial was postponed to July 6 as Judge M A Orenic weighs separate trials and pre trial motions. Layfield was killed when a concrete chunk was thrown from the Stuenkel Road overpass near Monee. The two other men were uninjured and initial manslaughter charges were upgraded to first degree murder. Bloom Trail High School officials called the defendants mainstream and not problematic. DeLorenzo and Taylor are Bloom Trail 1988 graduates. DeRouin remains a District 206 student.
