The plan beats two alternatives including rebuilding the road from Sauk Trail to Poplar extension and a 219th Street to intersection project, both needing 90 percent funding.Officials note accidents and a crested, buckholed surface. final widening to 40 feet may occur after parking lot expansion.
A Harvey man Larry P. Lionberg 28 and his Glenwood fiancée Carol J. Schmal 24 were found shot to death near Deer Creek and a vacant apartment in East Chicago Heights after a gas station robbery. One man held for questioning, two other suspects released, no arrests yet. The crime scene details include a 1970 Toyota linked to the case and a statewide alert issued Thursday.
Prairie State College District 515 voters go to the polls Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to consider an 11 cent tax levy increase for operating funds. The district spans four high school areas Bloom, Rich, Crete-Monee, and Homewood-Flossmoor and uses the same polling places as regular elections. The college seeks six cents more in education and five cents in building funds, with phase-in to limit annual cost to homeowners to 3 to 3.50 dollars.
James McCabe of Richton Park was named to the Elementary School District 159 board to serve until the next regular election in April 1979, succeeding Jefferson Kernodle who resigned for a job move to California. McCabe, married to Jeri, has four children and is active with Neil Armstrong PTO and the Lakewood Homeowners Association treasurer. The board also hired David Reithel for a preliminary landscape plan for Neil Armstrong School and will invite Matteson and Richton Park recreation directors to discuss future building use.
Richton Park will continue street sweeping tomorrow after weather halted work begun last week. Residents should avoid on street parking to allow completion, per Robert Burns director of public works.

Davidson, roommate to Lionberg, recalls their engagement talks and the couple’s quiet decision before the tragedy. Carol Schmal’s father George Schmal speaks from Glenwood, describing his daughter as pleasant and well liked.
