Roads work slated for south suburbs and Will County

The 1994 state and local highway program includes 68.3 million for South Cook County projects such as Harlem Avenue work in Orland Park and Tinley Park and on 95th Street in Oak Lawn. Will County gets 41 million including Richton Road near Crete and the Mill Street bridge in Monee.

Sex offender convicted in Chicago Heights case faces decades

Wayman Fields, 55, of West 16th Place, Chicago Heights, was found guilty of two counts of criminal sexual assault for abusing his 5-year-old stepdaughter. He faces up to 30 years in prison and is to be sentenced June 9. The case also involved his wife Alma Fields killing their two children and later dying by carbon monoxide poisoning in their garage.

Hill Hispanics Clean Up Streets in Chicago Heights

Tina Martinez of Impresion Mexicana Restaurant organized a neighborhood cleanup on the East Side of Chicago Heights. Nearly 50 residents and young volunteers cleared litter and graffiti, aided by a dumpster from Mayor Troiani. Erick Villarreal and sister Patricia helped recruit peers and defended youths labeled as gang members as misperceptions faded.
