High school trips go global widening costs and risks
Chicago area students from Oak Forest to Marian Catholic join international itineraries that cost up to $2,000 and stretch over weeks. Districts tighten rules on overnight travel citing risk management while families and boosters fund many journeys.
Veteran chaperone guides students on Washington trips
Moschel, a 54 year old Homewood Flossmoor High School dean and activities director, has chaperoned 56 trips to Washington, D C over nearly three decades. He led 40 teens on a four day trip for 695 dollars each, with stops at the Frederick Douglass home and National Cemetery. He plans fall sign ups to keep the program competitive as he also runs Hawaii and Caribbean trips for seniors and accompanies Explorers in Minnesota. His son Brett is a sophomore and may join future school trips.

District 230 Eyes Sponsorship Fees and Backups in School Trips
Parents warn that school sponsorship changes could affect trip fees and employer matches. Snowball’s U S board president Jacki Frederking notes liability concerns while districts such as Crete-Monee Evergreen Park and Homewood-Flossmoor insist on fully reviewed school sponsorship. HF faced recent controversy with seven students sent home from Hawaii over alleged underage drinking prompting parental lawsuits and a reevaluation of district 233 sponsored trips.
