Metra eyes study on second commuter line to Crete
Metra seeks bids for a feasibility study on a Union Pacific route from downtown Chicago to Crete with stops at seven suburbs. The project, funded 157000 by federal grant and Metra, would consider eight rush hour trains and hourly off-peak service ending at LaSalle Street Station, potentially diverting riders from the Illinois Central line and freeing parking.

Geologist details Thornton Quarry history and operations
Senior Geologist Lyndon Dean spoke at the Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve about the Thornton Quarry. He described a 50 by 50 foot initial quarry opening gifted in the 1840s by Hubbard's Northern Indian wife, the quarry’s production of around 36 stone sizes daily, and its role in building materials and shoreline erosion protection. The facility, operated by Material Service Corporation since 1988, sits near the Tri State Tollway and reaches about one mile across and 320 feet deep. Dean highlighted blasting methods, the processing sequence to nine inch or smaller stones, fossil abundance, and a 1989 open house that drew far more visitors than expected.
