Tollway subsidizes meals for workers amid rising deficits
Tollway Authority meals for 300 plus officials have cost motorists over 1 million dollars in the last five years. Since 1990 the cafeteria in the suburban administration building has run deficits totaling near 350 thousand dollars, rising to 428 thousand with unpaid losses. Marriott Restaurants runs the operation under cost-cutting plans, with losses funded by toll revenues despite higher menu prices. Officials defend the subsidies as easing meal access for captive workers, while critics call for price adjustments or ending the subsidies.
