CRIS Radio Aims to Guide Visually Impaired Readers

CRIS Radio serves thousands of visually impaired Chicago area residents by reading newspapers and magazines aloud over a sub carrier of WBEZ. Volunteers read top stories at about 15 to 16 per hour, with access via receivers provided free after approval. The service expands to Hispanic papers like La Raza and EXTRA Hispanic, and operates on a modest budget with aging listeners causing growing demand.

Council taps Dr Elliot as officer

Dr Janet Elliot, director of the Occupational Health Department at Suburban Heights Medical Center in Chicago Heights, is certified as a medical review officer by the Medical Review Officer Certification Council. The independent body awards the credential after a full application and examination process and is endorsed by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Trail teacher joins Earth and Atmospheric Summer Institute

Forest Trail Junior High School teacher Carol Schramm will join peers from Illinois and Missouri at the University of Missouri Rolla for the Earth and Atmospheric Science Summer Institute. Classes run until July 30. Institute director Dr. C Dale Elifits notes hands on activities teachers can bring back to classrooms. Instructors include Dr. John Rock Dr. John Schmitt Tom Butler and Karen Griffon. Institute is NSF sponsored.
