Rich Township High School District 227 board approved Louis A. Schmitt as principal of the East campus and Craig A. Schilling as assistant superintendent for fiscal affairs. Schmitt succeeds Albert Sandefer, who will resign to resume teaching in the district. Schilling replaces Edwin J. Kula, who leaves June 30 for a post in Lake Forest district.
Lines are drawn over whether private and parochial school children should be funded for transportation at public expense. Proponents aim to tie a parochiaid plan to broader school reform, while public schools and ED RED oppose linking funding to private education. Governors and lawmakers have wavered across sessions, with past vetoes and shifting support from Gov. James Thompson.
Richton Park village trustees refused Rich Township's requests to waive building permit fees and curb drainage requirements for a new township garage on Governor's Highway. The board unanimously rejected both waivers citing fairness and tax implications, while township attorney Dan Hughes argued costs would fall to taxpayers. Village officials disputed the notion, noting the project on prime commercial property and indicating inspections would still be paid by permit fees.
Richton Park trustees waived a 90 day notice to allow Centel to launch the Playboy channel on July 1. The rate will be $9 monthly with other premium channels at higher prices. In other business, the board approved staff appointments, honored a planning commissioner, and accepted a $37,714.20 bid for the Millard street water main project with intermittent service during construction.
Clyde Vasey quit the Matteson library board citing personal reasons and his new board post, effective July 9. The board seeks a replacement and had scheduled a June 24 workshop to discuss long range plans, potential facility upgrades, or another referendum on bonds for a new library at School Avenue and 207th Street. The current 85,000 square foot Oakwood site is said to be crowded with 2,000 square feet only in storage, prompting consideration of space-saving changes.
The Matteson Lions Club sponsors its annual car wash from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Mahler Marathon station 3627 West 216th Street Matteson. Interior and exterior wash is 4 dollars per car with pickup and delivery service by calling 748-0282. Proceeds aid the blind hard of hearing and needy residents in the south suburban community.
