Housing center reports continued housing discrimination in suburbs
The South Suburban Housing Center says discrimination persists in the southern suburbs with racial bias harder to detect and family status bias almost as common in rentals. Officials note landlords often hide prejudice, while HUD rules ban bias by race, origin, religion, sex, disability and family status. In 1998 the center logged 193 complaints, about 75 percent racial and 40 percent of rental complaints involving families with children, amid tests in 38 south Cook Will and Kankakee County communities.
