Prairie State College president Dr Richard Creal says 1977-78 was a banner year, highlighted by an approved 11 cent local tax increase to preserve programs, a five year accreditation recommendation from North Central Association, 15 new courses including photography, and construction of a vocational technical addition with welding, plumbing, air conditioning and sheet metal programs. The north campus building was renovated into a theater space as demand for occupational programs grows.
The Lions Club of Matteson hosts Augustfest at Matteson Memorial Park starting at 3 p.m. with a sightless vs Lions blindfolded softball game, food service from 5 to 8 p.m., and a 9 p.m. to midnight band. Beer wagons, drinks, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn, shakes, sno cones and candy are offered. Community volunteers manage committees for food, tickets, booths, and entertainment, with cleanup the following morning.
Mrs. Jean Steensma was appointed gifted program director for Elementary School District 159 for 1978 79 by the board of education. The move follows expansion of tutoring and guidance for gifted students from Sieden Prairie Neil A Armstrong and Woodgate schools. Superintendent Tesmond praised the appointment noting the program began in 1976 77 and will now be coordinated and directed by a specially trained leader in planning training and direct instruction.
