Guard Faber joins Illinois flood relief amid 500-year Mississippi surge
The Illinois National Guard responds to historic Mississippi River flooding near Quincy with 3,300 soldiers and airmen. Art and Pat Faber of Frankfort describe their son as history in the making while locals rally to sandbag and support relief efforts amid long shifts and surreal scenes along levees named Indian Graves and Dead Dog. Sgt. Wedeking, a Star staff member, remains on duty as the river’s flood crest approaches and crews endure extreme conditions.
