D Day memories linger for Hal and Phyllis Carlstead
Hal Carlstead served as a communications officer on the destroyer Herndon during D Day. He and wife Phyllis joined a Northwestern Alumni Association Normandy trip and attended a wreath laying at the American Cemetery in St Laurent. The couple recall rationing, family life, and their postwar move from Chicago to the South Suburbs, now splitting time between Florida and Olympia Fields with 12 grandchildren.

Illinois announces 133 million in road contracts for 214 projects statewide with many in Cook and Will counties. Planned resurfacing and improvements include Route 30, 26th Street, Harlem Avenue, 95th Street, 159th Street, Flossmoor Road, Maple Road and Cedar Road in communities such as Park Forest, Palos Heights, Palos Hills, Oak Lawn, Country Club Hills, Flossmoor, Homewood, New Lenox, Joliet, and Mokena, plus concrete work, gutters, sewers, and landscaping along several corridors.
