Indianapolis Canal Tour Highlights Local Heritage
During a stay in Indianapolis last month I toured the Central Canal area home to the Medal of Honor Memorial and the new Indiana Historical Society building. The THS hosts a Grand Opening Genealogy Conference on July 30 and 31 with limited 300 registrations, featuring European topics Friday and American topics Saturday. The Archdiocese of Chicago archives guide notes Sacramental records before 1915, microfilm for pre 1916, and restricted orphanage and school records accessible only with consent or directory information. The Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Archives sits at 711 W. Monroe St. in Chicago, with public reading hours weekdays. The piece also reviews Jeane Eddy Westin's revised Finding Your Roots and notes additions on computers and the Internet, with acknowledgments to National Archives staff and a growing federation of genealogical societies.
