MWRD Approves Waterfront Leases To Spur Development
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District board voted 8-1 to relax land lease rules to lure developers, teed up a Crestwood 58 acre site for a $50 million project with longer leases and waivers on near water restrictions while preserving a 60 foot green space. Critics warn an emphasis on open space trails may be missed in rapid land development. Crestwood area debates over public access and safety linger as staff weigh maintenance and case by case access obligations.

Devine pushes tougher gun laws in Illinois
Cook County State's Attorney Dick Devine urged the Illinois legislature to stiffen penalties for unlawful gun use by felons and to raise the buying age from 18 to 21. He noted a study of 1800 cases in early 1999 showing high gang involvement and that most guns belonged to offenders under 24. He said probation should generally be off the table and prison time favored.
