Two Girls Save Five By Quick Fire Escape In Homewood
Gretchen Widmer and Sara Williams, both 12, used lessons from Red Cross babysitting and fire safety training to evacuate five younger siblings from a split level home in Homewood after a lightning strike ignited a fire. They alerted neighbors, called 911, and escaped with everyone outside before smoke detectors fully activated. Fire officials credited their rapid, orderly action and emphasized not reentering a burning building.
