Area veteran wins Marine of the Year 1995 in Illinois
William J. Sakalares of Chicago Heights received the Marine of the Year 1995 honor at the Illinois Marine Corps League convention in Effingham. A Korean War veteran and founding commandant of the South Suburban Chicago Detachment, he chaired the annual golf outing and led a memorial drive for two Marines who died in the Oklahoma City bombing. He serves as Chicago Heights code enforcement officer and is active in local veterans groups.
