Composting debate rekindled near Richton Park site

Richton Park officials maintain a neutral stance after annexing the 40 acre site once eyed for Suburban Composting Farms. Neighbors cite toxic chemicals rodents bugs and a dreadful odor if approved. Suburban Composting owned by Richard Ipema sought IEPA approval and a county denied a required special use permit. IEPA decision due by mid March.

Murdered boy's mom charged in 8 month old death

Yvonne Mighty 17 year old Matteson woman charged with first degree murder in the Dec 13 death of her 8 month old son Shahon Mighty. Andrew Driver 22 charged earlier. Mighty bond set at 750000, Driver at 1 million. Shahon died from child abuse and blunt trauma at Cook County medical examiners report shows. Driver dated Mighty since July. Two months prior he had spent a month at Christ Hospital Oak Lawn.

Rich Township ESDA payments under scrutiny after resignations

Rich Township administrators faced questions over ESDA bills as former chief Chuck Corkery resigned Jan 11 after a months long Star investigation into questionable credit cardings and documentation from October 1991 to October 1992. Wondaal testifies in the federal corruption case against former Chicago Heights Mayor Charles Panici and two city officials that his Fitzpatrick Brothers Disposal Service and Fitz-Mar Inc contracts yielded bribes from 1980 to 1989. He named payments totaling six figures to Panici Gliottoni and others, with front men relaying funds. The trial also covers kickback schemes extending to city contractors and other officials including Nick Lobue and Louise Marshall.
