The south suburbs faced more than five inches of snow and a Canadian cold front driving sub zero conditions. Blowing snow closed arteries and slowed traffic to 18 mph as public works fought to keep roads open. Rail and bus service faced drifted tracks while commuters crowded stations. Schools opened late or dismissed for in service days as crews cleared alleys for garbage pickup. The National Weather Service warned of ten below zero temperatures with gusty winds. District 162 board defers a plan for elementary attendance boundaries after receiving new data including an ethnic survey. The meeting adjourned to a special session Monday at 7 30 PM as the board weighs plans that would bus students among Arcadia Applewood Oakwood Manor Olympia Fields and Illinois schools while avoiding Route 30 or district divisions.
Kaufman and Broad's suit against the village of Matteson moved to February 7 in Cook County Circuit Court. The case seeks definitions of town house classification and housing type, plus the structure size, as planning officials and Kal Rowan argued about rezoning portions of the Woodgate property currently zoned for multiple dwellings.
More than 100 residents crowded the State of Illinois Building in Chicago to testify on a proposed bingo rule limiting games to once per week at a single location. A quorum absence blocked a public hearing, delaying the measure as State Rep. Harry Yourell and his Joint Committee on Administrative Rules plan to refile the rule with corrected publication and a 45 day comment period.
