Reagan budget funds Argonne project for 1990 start
The 1990 federal budget proposes 40 million to begin construction at Argonne National Laboratory near Lemont. The 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source APS aims to produce powerful X-ray beams for chemistry physics biology and materials science. Completion is planned for 1995 with total program costs near 1 billion including ~500 million for experimental stations.

Thornwood Speech Team Places Fourth at Thornridge Meet
Thornwood high school speech team finished fourth at Thornridge high school in Dalton with 15 of 23 finalists advancing. Jennifer Vollbrecht and Nick Thukral won original ovation and extemporaneous speaking. Kawone Harris took second in verse reading. Latta and Harris placed third in dramatic duet acting. Maureen Meginnis earned third in radio speaking. Waterman and Fahey were fourth in extemporaneous and radio speaking respectively. Additional finalists included Kruse, Thompson, Weber, Jacobs, Basta, Bugajski, plus participants Bobis, Brandt, Lavin, Price and Quandt.

Shirley Green the Rich Township assessor announced that all tax exempt property holders must file an affidavit certificate by January 31 to retain exempt status for 1989 Exempt properties include land owned by schools churches villages cities park districts and libraries. If ownership use or leasing changes notify the Cook County assessor in writing within 30 days to avoid back taxes. The township assessor will help file affidavits and can provide forms.
