District 206 drug program in peril if tax vote fails

Bloom Township High School District 206 faces elimination of a four year drug education program if a $3.9 million cut is approved after a February referendum. Coordinator Jeanne Zamparelli warns state funding covers 60 percent of the $36,600 program and the district must balance its budget without the funding. Community groups have contributed funds and a $12,000 grant supports a curriculum, while parents seek alternative funding to preserve Operation Snowball and related services.

Calumet City pushes to erase the sin strip with $9 million bonds

The Calumet City Council unanimously approved a $9 million bond plan to fund a $7 million tax increment financing district on State Street and a $2 million water meter upgrade. The project will demolish about five blocks on State Line Road and six on State Street to replace taverns and liquor stores with redevelopment, aiming to end drug activity and prostitution and attract new businesses. Demolition could start within three months with eminent domain possible, and liquor licenses will not be renewed within the TIF area.
