Mild weather shocks South Suburbs after heavy snow blitz

After a weekend wallop of near record 20 inch snowfall, the south suburbs faced a light dusting and a chilling cold front. Temperatures fell to single digits as schools, businesses and transit faced shutdowns and delayed service. Police logged few crimes as cleanup and traffic snarls dominated the scene. Two armed highwaymen robbed a Crete gas station and fled on snowmobiles, eluding capture.

District 162 Malls New Plan Debated Then Deferred

Matteson Elementary School District 162 postponed a decision on attendance area boundaries to a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday. After a three hour session Tuesday, Dr. Max Stachura urged careful reflection to avoid a repeat of last year’s contentious meeting. The board’s support for the Citizens’ Advisory Committee’s plan waned, with only two members likely to back its recommendations, while a modified plan maintaining Arcadia School boundaries gained tentative backing.

Mayor pushes state in Pinnacle bingo probe

Chicago Heights mayor Charles Panici pressed state officials to accelerate a long running inquiry into three license bingo games at the Pinnacle banquet hall at 20620 Halsted Street. Despite his efforts, hearings likely will wait two more months as the state investigates the Pinnacle tied to churches and a Franklin Park fraternal group. The Star revealed questions over who truly sponsors the games and whether the Pinnacle operates as a church, with staff and license holders relucta nt to comment and an investigative group ordered from the premises.

Widening Decision January 29

Matteson village board schedules a special meeting for January 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the village hall to decide on the FAUS project for widening 216th and Main streets.
