Peking pledged support to anti Hanoi Cambodian guerrillas to the best of its ability as fighting flared on the southern frontier with Vietnam. Officials said several Vietnamese invaders were killed or wounded and warned of counterattacks if border intrusions continue.
Reagan praised his arms control team for returning Soviets to negotiations and urged caution to avoid euphoria over last week’s resumption. He said, “We can’t rest on our laurels. This is the beginning of a process.”
Gov. James R. Thompson says no state income tax rise for education next fiscal year due to lack of support and belief it’s unnecessary. He may back $200 million in extra taxes on cigarettes, liquor, used cars and interstate calls to boost school aid, plus up to $400 million in new revenue growth. Stateville Correctional Center, once run by inmates, earned accreditation from the National Commission on Corrections after staff upgrades and $20 million in renovations following a riot and police seizure six years earlier.
Matteson Village President Mark Stricker issued a veto halting the board’s approval of Slager and Schick for the 30 year municipal refuse contract. He directed trustees to reexamine the bid at the January 21 meeting, citing concerns about the bidder’s inexperience and urging careful reconsideration.
Three candidates for Matteson village trustee announced opposition to the proposed new 15,000 square foot library site near School avenue and 207th street and pledged to defeat the April referendum for $1.5 million in bonds. They urged retaining the existing Oakwood lane facility as a branch, arguing the west-of-I-57 site would better serve more homes, with questions about walking distances and costs raised by library administrator Maurine Hoffmann.
Richton Park officials expect spring construction on a $1.4 million commuter rail depot replacing the old building. The project includes an 8,500 square foot platform windbreaks a full canopy two warming houses new stairs and ramps to aid handicapped passengers as daily boardings rise along the Illinois Central Gulf line.
Nominating petitions opened this week for Matteson and Richton Park municipal elections. Matteson seeks a village president and three trustees with Mark Stricker defending against Joseph Feehery. Seven candidates vie for three trustee seats. Ballot order lottery set for January 22. In Richton Park village president Murell Reeves seeks reelection against challenger Rudolph Banovich. Petitions accepted until noon Saturday Richton Park and 8 pm Monday for Matteson. Trustees Grisamore and Wall decline second terms due to work and family obligations.
