Tollway overhaul eyed for next decade in Illinois
Illinois tollway officials warn 160 miles of aging roadways are 40 years old or more and due for total reconstruction or widening within the next ten years. Preliminary plans include rebuilding I-294 between Balmoral and Dempster and widening I-90 near Roselle Road, with costs likely in the billions.
Illinois tollways face major rebuilds over aging sections
Nearly 60 percent of Illinois 274 mile tollway network is at least 40 years old. Officials say 160 miles must be rebuilt and widened in the next decade including an 18 mile southern stretch of the Tri State Tollway to curb future traffic problems and avoid costly repairs. Delays on Tri State, Northwest and East West segments are projected until 2004 due to billion dollar costs. A toll increase to fund the work remains possible.
