Retiring Father Ruffie Reflects On 38 Years Of Service
Very Rev. Robert G. Ruffie conducted his final Eucharist at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family in Park Forest on New Year’s Day after 38 years of service. Aged 65, he will retire to Florida this year and plans to join a new church there. Ruffie arrived at Holy Family in 1954 and was ordained in 1952. He recalls changing church dynamics, shrinking membership, and liberal interpretations of the Bible as influences during his tenure. He was elected Dean of the Joliet Deanery in 1973 and says his goal was to make Jesus Christ real in parish life and foster a close-knit Holy Family community. He will miss the parish and its members and was recognized for his long service during Homecoming Weekend. He hopes for peace and love in the community as he moves to Florida to continue ministry locally.
