Hoffman finds new name after roll call in school mixup
Hoffman's five year tuition scholarship faced strain as funds ran short. A 10 cent IC train fare from 72nd Street to Guicley proved costly, pushing him to switch to a 3 cent streetcar. During a roll call, he learned his given name was unsuitable, being told “That's no saint's name,” leading to the name Matt. His early schooling included Irish classmates at Quigley where he studied.
