Dopey the doll with a long coat floppy hat and four digits dates to 1937 when Snow White debuted. It is among more than 3 000 dolls in the Nancy Pierce collection. Story and photos appear on pages 35 and 37.
Village trustees renamed Lakewood park Klawitter park honoring Margaret and Edward Klawitter and Lincoln Crossing park Pierce park for Mary Pierce. Klawitters served in village roles, Pierce helped on the plan commission and Bicentennial commission. The board also backs a self insurance study costing 300 to 500 dollars and assigns a representative to apply for federal snow removal aid up to 3500 dollars. Bid accepted for two police squad cars at 12326.98 from Yanson Chevrolet.
Richton Park plan commission halted a Cheker Oil request to add a 44 by 50 foot canopy four extra pumps and an underground tank at Sauk Trail and Governors Highway. The canopy fails the 45 foot front yard setback, with variance down to 31.5 feet. Setback shown is 10 feet. The matter to be revived in March. DeMallo elected vice chairman. Nazarenes receive curb and gutter waiver pending engineer approval.
The Illinois Department of Revenue expands bingo enforcement after investigations into venues like the Pinnacle in Chicago Heights. A raid on the Flea Market at 6800 North Western Avenue Chicago led to one arrest for violations of a revoked license tied to a Senior Citizens and Public Service Employees Association of Illinois game. The probe targets Bingo palaces in the Chicago metro area amid suspected law abuses.
Weather sparked repeated breakdowns on Illinois Central Gulf commuter trains. Delays totaled hours as 60 cars were out Tuesday morning from 132 needed, with all stops local service used on Blue Island and South Chicago branches. A mishap from a hard coupling near Kensington added to delays, plus a sick passenger and ambulance stoppage. Commuters faced three to four hour downtown trips. two 10 car trains were joined, creating further delays. The Chicago South Suburban Mass Transit District seeks remedies, heater upgrades, and a snow emergency plan with ICG and the RTA.
Arthur Ohlerking and Mrs Charlotte Hoppenworth seek Matteson village board seats as three terms expire. Goldstein Matheny aim for re election. Dunn will not run. Others filing include Max Linton William O'Brien and Lois Butler who is unopposed on January 8.
Trustees authorize a program issuing windshied placards to handicapped motorists for designated parking spaces. Placards are transferable between cars and available at the township office. Also named James D. Brown highway commissioner to apply for federal disaster funds for snow removal from Jan 16 to 25, with a special budget meeting set for Monday at 7:30 p.m.
